This book compiles the insights, discussions and recommendations that were the outcome of the presentation of 12 case studies at a very productive and highly intensive conference in Kundasang, Malaysia, in December 1998. By focusing on case studies, the goal was to encourage a problem-solving approach which takes into account both the principles regarding indigenous peoples' involvement in the establishment of protected areas and the actual political, social, economic, cultural and environmental contexts in which protected areas and indigenous peoples are situated. The case studies presented in the book analyse a wide range of interactions between indigenous peoples and protected areas, from the old-style national parks, which have expelled indigenous peoples, to more recent initiatives that try to accommodate indigenous interests and even respect indigenous rights. The book is a valuable contribution to the discussion of indigenous peoples and protected areas.
