News of the massacre at Panzós reached IWGIA in the beginning of June. We were about to issue our IWGIA NEWSLETTER No. 19 and therefore barely managed to include a short report on the matter by Jens Lohmann.
However, we felt that the importance of the May 29th events, in all their horror and bestiality, was such that any information about what had happened, why and how it happened, should be as widely publicized as possible.
We therefore are extremely thankful for the abundant material sent to us by a friend from Central America (for obvious reasons he prefers to remain anonymous) and we immediately decided to use it for our next IWGIA Document.
Apart from the introduction, the material consisted of reports, interviews, testimonies, official statements, protest declarations, etc., that had either been published in the Guatemalan press or issued by various organizations, trade unions, church bodies, etc. It also included a few articles from international newspapers and magazines.
