The Saami call their territory Sapmi. Conceptually, the term encompasses the geographical area, the Saami territory and the Saami people, all in one. The land and the people are intrinsically united. During. the colonisation of Sapmi. the territory and the people were divided between four different nation-states. This is to say that. among other things, the Saami as a people became subjected to four different judicial systems. In this way, the Saami share the fate of many other indigenous peoples who have seen their land divided between two or more nation-states, each one with its own special constitution and laws affecting the indigenous peoples. Today, Sapmi is located within the territories of the nation-states and constitutes, therefore, an interior colony.
