The rebellion of the Andean peoples of Peru

BY JAIME BORDA FOR DEBATES INDÍGENAS

The socio-political crisis the country is going through is systematic and structural. With this new wave of repression and racism, the way in which Indigenous peoples and peasants who live in the South of the country got organized should be highlighted. Treated by the State as second-class citizens, the Aymara, Chanca, Quechua, Ashaninka, and Awajun peoples are suffering and resisting institutional violence. If elections are not moved forwards and a Constituent Assembly is not formed, the Peruvian people will continue taking to the streets.

Joenia Wapichana: “FUNAI was not defending Indigenous Peoples”

BY MARÍA DE LOURDES BELDI DE ALCANTAR FOR DEBATES INDÍGENAS

After becoming Brazil’s first Indigenous Federal Deputy (2019-2022), President Lula Da Silva has chosen her to chair the new National Indian Foundation (in Portuguese, FUNAI). “We are invisible; we are ghosts”: Inuit in Denmark and Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland)

I lost my language, my mother tongue. In my school we never learned about Greenland, our history, culture or tradition. Not a word. I grew up in Denmark and I thought I was white. I thought I was Danish. But somewhere inside me I always felt wrong, different, and shameful.”

So began the first of many powerful and emotional Inuit testimonies to the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples Mr. Francisco Calí Tzay on his first day of his official visit to Denmark and Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) from 1-10 February 2023.
