About IWGIA

IWGIA and Forests of the World foster debate on human rights and climate change

Both, the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the Climate Agreement signed last year during the COP21 in Paris, are strong tools to combat climate change. At the same time, these are mechanisms that ensure responsible resource consumption and the rights for all to a decent and sustainable life.

The Climate Agreement signed in Paris recognises the rights of indigenous peoples and mentions the role of the world’s forests in the fight to protect the climate and environment of the Earth. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal no. 15 “Life on land” and Goal 12 “responsible consumption and production” also emphasise the importance of sustainable use of the world’s forest resources as crucial for ecological and economic development in the future.

IWGIA goes on the air in Spanish

IWGIA is proud to announce the launch of Radio Encuentros -Radio Encounters- as an initiative aimed at promoting the recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights. Radio Encuentros is an open platform for free use and download. It contains locally produced programmes and background material on different aspects of the situation of indigenous peoples. We hope that the initiative will provide a more interactive space for the dissemination of information on indigenous issues and demands in Latin America. We take the opportunity to invite anyone interested in contributing to join us in this project. All initiatives and ideas are welcome and guidelines can be found on radio.iwgia.org and on Radio Encuentros’ Facebook Page.

Orbituary for Finn Lynge

Finn was a board member of IWGIA from 1992-95. It was during those years that hunters of the Arctic were attacked from environment protection groups, and Finn was a strong defender of the rights of the hunters to pursue, defend and develop their cultures and traditions. Before others, he saw the dangers to the Arctic environment of industrial developments in Europe, North America and Russia. Thus became environmental issues Finn’s primary concern in the years ahead.
