Documenting Indigenous Peoples’ Struggle

Transfering experiences to the next generation of indigenous leaders

The book ”Indigenous Peoples Rights in International Law” published by Galdu and IWGIA was presented by two of the co-editors, Petter Wille, Ambassador and Special Envoy of Human Rights of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Dalee Sambo-Doroug, Expert Member of the UN Permanent Forum.

This book tells the personal stories of the indigenous and non-indigenous, State and non-state actors involved in the making of the current framework of indigenous peoples’ rights, including the revision of ILO convention 107 that lead to the ILO convention 169 as well as the drafting of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

As a compilation of personal memoirs, the book will be a tool for transferring experiences of the struggles of indigenous peoples to the coming generations.

Presentation of The Indigenous World 2015

The second book launched was IWGIA’s publication ”The Indigenous World 2015”. In 54 country reports and 15 articles on international processes, this books provides a yearly update on some of the most important achievements and developments related to indigenous peoples’ rights in the world today.

It also gives a snapshot of the human rights situation for specific indigenous peoples in specific national conditions.

”This book is an indispensable tool for getting an overview of what is going on around the world,” said Lez Malezer, Co- Chair of the National Congress of Australia's First Peoples.

”In my office we only have one copy and when one needs it, one must go looking through all the offices as it is being used extensively as a reference book by everyone”, he said.

Business and Human rights

The third book published was Business and Human Rights, addresses cases from Africa, Asia and Latin America, and examines the experiences of indigenous peoples with access to remedy when their human rights are affected by corporate activities.

By drawing from these experiences it seeks to inform the actions of corporate and State actors in relation their business and human rights obligation to ensure that indigenous peoples have access to effective remedy.

This book is the product of a collaboration of three organizations - Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), Almáciga, and IWGIA.
