Recommendations from Uganda's National Dialogue on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Extractive Industries

How can we ensure that extractive industries in Uganda do not harm the lives and rights of indigenous peoples in Uganda - and that these industries instead generate positive impacts for indigenous peoples in the country?

This was the question that relevant stakeholders met to discuss in Uganda based on this study by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (read it here >>). The event was hosted by the African Commission’s Working Group on Indigenous Populations and the Uganda Human Rights Commission in collaboration with IWGIA.

IWGIA's Senior Advisor on Land Rights, Marianne Wiben Jensen, who is also a member of African Commission's Working Group on Indigenous Populations, participated in the event and made the following statement afterward:

”The National dialogue on extractive industries and the rights of indigenous peoples in Uganda was very successful. In collaboration with the African Commission’s Working Group on Indigenous Populations, the Uganda Human Rights Commission did a great job in organizing and hosting the dialogue. The findings and recommendations of the African Commission’s Study on extractive industries and the rights of indigenous peoples were successfully disseminated, and the dialogue provided an important platform for discussing these recommendations and for elaborating suggestions and plans for how to implement the recommendations in Uganda. I highly welcome the establishment of the National Task Force that will be established by the Uganda Human Rights Commission to take forward the implementation of the recommendations” explains Marianne Jensen.
