This synthesis report of marginalized and vulnerable indigenous peoples in Thailand represents the cases of ten indigenous groups who are targets of the Community Knowledge-Based Database System (CKBDS) project for empowering the most marginalized and vulnerable indigenous groups in Thailand, namely Mlabri, Kow (Umpi), Bisu, Chong, Yakoor, Saek, Moken, Moklen, Urak-Lawoy and Mani. These groups are encountering problems of rights to nationality, land and access to natural resources, as well as recognition of their identity.

Their problems stem from two major causes:
1. The weakness of indigenous traditional institutions in using and maintaining indigenous knowledge; and
2. Impact from the enforcement of state authorities and the influence of development efforts in relation to fundamental rights and access to natural resources.

One of the project’s major objectives is to develop an information system that can support the capacity building of indigenous leaders in communicating, campaigning and negotiating to reduce inequality of marginalization and vulnerability.
