Obituary for Lazaro Moringe Parkipuny

It is with deep sorrow and regret we recieve the message that Lazaro Moringe Parkipuny passed away yesterday. He was an old friend of IWGIA and the first indigenous representative from Africa to participate in meetings of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1989. He did that at a time when he was a member of the Tanzanian parliament representing Ngorongoro district. He was a humanitarian in the best way of the word, and in his presentation to the United Nations and in his daily work as an activist and as a parliamentarian he showed not only courage but also tolerance. He was a mentor to indigenous peoples in Tanzania and his relentless efforts took place under great stress but his sacrifices will never be forgotten. We have lost a unique friend and indigenous peoples of Tanzania and Africa have lost a great human being. Jens Dahl, Former Director IWGIA
