New journal sheds light on Sámi rights gaps in the Nordic countries

The journal is a collaboration between the Saami Council, IWGIA, and Sámi Allaskuvla (Sámi University of Applied Sciences)

The first two issues of The State of Sápmi journal have been published online. The journal aims to tackle socio-political issues within Sámi society and provide analysis and perspectives on Sámi rights. The project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Customary Justice of Indigenous Peoples in Colombia: Between Reality and Historical Debt

The Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC) played a key role in the implementation of the Special Indigenous Jurisdiction. In 1991, Article 246 of the new Political Constitution established that Indigenous Authorities may exercise jurisdictional functions within their territories, in accordance with their traditional customs and practices. In this context, the 2017 ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice in favour of Feliciano Valencia marked a historic milestone, setting legal precedent on the importance of Indigenous justice systems. Looking ahead, progress is still needed on the Law of Coordination, aimed at harmonising the Special Indigenous Jurisdiction with the ordinary justice system.

We express our unequivocal condemnation of the recent surge in deadly violence targeting Indigenous Peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), perpetrated by military forces of the Government of Bangladesh and Bengali settlers. These acts constitute the peak of an escalating violence targeting Indigenous Peoples reflecting a pattern of systemic oppression, including the use of sexual violence as a weapon of terror and control.
