Indian citizenship laws have deep impact on Adivasis
On 5 January 2020, Naresh Koch, a detainee in the Goalpara detention centre in Assam, breathed his last breath at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. He became the 29th person who had died in detention since 2014.
According to reliable information received by IWGIA and Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), the forest rights of indigenous peoples’ and forest dwelling communities in India as secured in the Forest Rights Act (2006) are under attack from at least three angles simultaneously.
The International Working Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) is writing to seek intervention of the UN Committee Against Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination under its Early Warning Procedures for prevention of violations of the rights of indigenous peoples of India through the Draft National Forest Policy, 2018 being drafted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF), Government of India at present.
